An intimate sauna for two is an excellent entry-level build: affordable, manageable, and deeply relaxing.
A two-person sauna is an ideal first sauna project for couples. It's smaller, cheaper, easier to build, and creates an intimate wellness space. Most couples saunas cost $3,000–$8,000 and take 2–4 weeks to build.
4x6 Feet: The sweet spot. Accommodates two people comfortably on facing benches. 24 sq ft interior. Total length allows space for sitting and slight movement.
4x4 Feet: Tighter but workable. Two people sitting closely on one bench. 16 sq ft. Adequate for most couples but snug.
Height: 6.5–7 feet interior height. Lower ceilings heat faster in small spaces, reducing energy costs.
Single Wide Bench: Two people sit side-by-side on an 18-20" deep bench, 4-5 feet long. Simple, intimate, space-efficient.
Two-Level Benches: One bench at 18" height (sitting), one at 12" height (foot rest). More comfortable for longer sessions.
Facing Benches: (For 4x6 only) Benches on opposite walls. Creates an intimate setting. Requires more space.
Electric Heater: 3-5 kW: Ideal for small saunas. 3 kW heats 4x4 in 30 minutes; 5 kW heats 4x6 in 25–30 minutes. Electric is safe, clean, and easy.
Wood Stove (Optional): Some couples prefer wood-burning for the aesthetic and experience. Requires chimney, ventilation planning, and more maintenance.
Framing & Insulation: $800–$1,500
Cedar Interior & Benches: $1,200–$2,000
Heater & Controls: $800–$1,500
Ventilation & Electrical: $600–$1,000
Door & Hardware: $300–$600
Total: $3,700–$6,600 DIY or semi-DIY. Professional build: $5,000–$8,000.
Affordable: Modest budget compared to larger saunas.
Achievable: A couple or small team can build in 2–4 weeks.
DIY-Friendly: Many couples undertake DIY builds (with or without professional help). The scale is manageable.
Intimate: Designed for two creates a special shared wellness experience.
Upgradeable: A couples' sauna can be upgraded over time (better heater, added changing room, outdoor shower).
A two-person sauna is an excellent investment in your wellness and your relationship.
