Converting a shed into a sauna is one of the most practical ways to get a custom sauna without building a new structure from scratch — you already have four walls, a roof, and a foundation. Bryan had an existing 11×16 shed in Olympia that he wanted to turn into a full sauna suite. We took it from stripped studs to a finished two-room layout: an insulated hot room with an electric sauna heater, cedar paneling, and proper ventilation, plus an adjacent warm room for cooling down and relaxing between sessions. The warm room has large windows oriented toward Puget Sound views — a great spot to sit and recover before going back in for another round. The design was built around Olympia's wet Pacific Northwest climate, so the building envelope had to handle constant rain and humidity without trapping moisture in the wall cavity. We detailed the vapor barrier, insulation, and ventilation strategy specifically for this climate. The shed conversion approach kept costs significantly lower than a ground-up outdoor sauna build while giving Bryan a 6-person sauna suite with dedicated changing space.
