
You can buy the right fan and the right ducting and still end up with a stuffy sauna, because ventilation isn't about the parts — it's about where the openings go. Placement is the whole game. Get the intake and exhaust in the right spots and two modest vents will keep the air fresh; put those same two vents in the wrong places and they do almost nothing. Here's exactly where each one goes.
Everything else follows from this. You want fresh air entering on one side and stale air leaving on the other, so a current sweeps across the room and through the space where people sit and breathe. Intake and exhaust go on opposite walls. If they're on the same wall, the air short-circuits straight from one to the other and the middle of the room — where you are — never gets cleared.

The intake brings in fresh outdoor air. The one thing you don't want is that air arriving cold on the bench, so it should enter at the heater, where the stove warms it on the way in. There are two proven ways to do that:

This is where most saunas go wrong. The exhaust should be low — at or below the foot bench, roughly 6-12 inches off the floor up to bench height, on the wall opposite the intake. The reason is that the air you want to remove — the stale, CO2-heavy air — sits down low at breathing level, not up at the ceiling. Pulling it out low, ideally with a small fan, clears the air you actually breathe and lets the good steam stay up in the room where it belongs.
The classic mistake is putting the exhaust high on the wall or in the ceiling. That pulls out the hottest, freshest steam the moment you throw water — so the sauna feels harsh and weak — while the stale air just sits at bench level. High exhaust is the single most common reason a sauna with vents still feels off.
