6-Person Sauna: Size, Layout, and What It Really Costs
Most people who ask for a 6 person sauna are picturing a night with friends, not a solo session. That changes the design in ways that aren't obvious until you start laying it out on paper. Six adults need somewhere to actually sit at the same height, in the same heat, without anyone's knees in anyone's back — and that requirement drives the footprint, the heater, and the electrical service more than any other decision you'll make.
Here's what a real 6 person sauna takes, based on the sizes we design and build.
How Big Does a 6 Person Sauna Need to Be?
The honest answer is that "6 person" isn't a size, it's a bench-length problem. Capacity comes from how much usable top bench you have, not from floor area.
Plan on 18 inches of bench width per person as an absolute minimum, and 24 inches for comfort. Six people at 24 inches each is 144 inches — 12 feet of continuous top bench. At the 18-inch minimum you can squeeze into about 9 feet, but everyone is shoulder to shoulder and nobody is leaning back.
Now translate that to a room. In an 8x8 sauna, the finished interior lands around 90 by 90 inches after framing, insulation, and paneling. An L-shaped upper bench 24 inches deep running along two walls gives you roughly 90 inches on the long leg and 66 inches on the short leg — about 156 inches, or 13 feet of seating. That's six people at a comfortable 24 inches with a little room left over.
So 8x8 is the practical floor for a 6 person sauna, and 8x10 is where it stops feeling tight. The extra two feet buys you a U-shaped bench, a full 6-foot section where somebody can lie down while others sit, and enough clearance to walk past the heater without brushing it.
We generally recommend 8x8 as the sweet spot for most builds — it's an efficient use of standard lumber lengths, it fits 4-6 on the top bench, and with the lower benches you can pack in 10-12 for a party. If your primary use case is genuinely six adults at once on a regular basis, go to 8x10.

Bench Layout for Six People
There are three layouts that work at this size, and the choice isn't purely aesthetic.
L-shaped benches along two adjacent walls are our go-to for 8x8 builds. You get the most seating per square foot, and two people can lie down simultaneously — one on each leg of the L. That last part matters more than people expect. A significant portion of solo sessions involve stretching, and couples use the L constantly.
U-shaped benches wrap the upper bench around three walls. This only works at 8x8 and above, and it's the right call for a sauna that regularly holds six or more. Everyone faces inward, which changes the social feel of the room. The trade-off is that you lose a wall for a window and the build is more complex.
Straight benches along the longest wall are the simplest to build but cap out around four people at a comfortable width. Not really a 6-person solution unless the room is 12 feet long.
Whichever layout you pick, the heights matter more than the shape:
- Upper bench: 40-48 inches below the finished interior ceiling
- Middle bench: 16-20 inches below the top bench
- Lower bench or step: 16-20 inches below the middle
The reason for measuring down from the ceiling instead of up from the floor is that the goal is to get bathers into the löyly cavity — the zone above the heater where convective heat has distributed evenly. Your foot bench needs to sit 4-8 inches above the top of the heater stones. If the foot bench is level with or below the stones, stratification fails, the room delivers a hot head and cold feet, and the foot bench never reaches the 131-158°F range needed to keep bacteria and mold in check.
Bench depth: 24 inches on the upper benches (five 2x4s laid horizontally with about half-inch gaps), 16 inches on the lower (three 2x4s). A 24-inch bench lets an adult lie flat. A 16-20 inch bench means an arm hanging off the edge. Benches should also run at least 6 feet long for a grown adult to stretch out.

One thing worth avoiding: fully enclosing the front face of the benches. Upper bench slats have gaps so sweat drips to the floor below. If that space is sealed off, you can't clean it, and moisture accumulates somewhere you can't reach. Keep the bench fronts open, or make any panels easily removable.

Ceiling Height in a Larger Sauna
Interior ceiling should be 7.5 to 8 feet. In a 6-person room this isn't optional the way it might be in a tiny two-seater — you need the vertical space to raise a wide upper bench high enough to clear the stones.
Be aware of what that means outside. A 7.5-8 foot interior ceiling plus a pitched roof to shed snow and rain puts the exterior peak at 10 feet or more. On an 8x10 footprint that's a substantial structure. Before you commit, check whether it blocks a view from the house, creates a privacy issue with a neighbor, or just feels out of scale in the yard.
If site constraints push back, a 7 to 7.5 foot interior ceiling drops the peak to 8-9 feet. The thermal experience is still good — you'll just get occasional moments where the head feels warmer than the feet. Compensate with strong insulation and better ventilation. Regardless of roof pitch, build a flat interior ceiling. Install ceiling joists below the roof slope and leave an attic space above. A sloped interior ceiling disrupts the convective loop and distributes steam unevenly. This is standard practice in Finland and it's worth the extra framing.
Heater Sizing and Electrical
This is where a 6 person sauna gets expensive in a way people don't budget for.
The baseline rule is 1 kW per 45 cubic feet in a well-insulated, wood-lined room.

Adjust up for outdoor exposure, glass doors or large windows, masonry walls, insulation below R-11, or cold climates. Adjust down only for genuinely excellent insulation (R-20+ walls) or ceilings under 7 feet.
Electrical is the real cost jump. Most 6-9 kW heaters run on a dedicated 240V, 40-50A circuit. Once you cross 10 kW you're typically at 60A. That's a heavier feed, heavier wire, and in a lot of houses it means evaluating whether the main panel has capacity at all. Get a licensed electrician to look at the panel before you finalize the sauna size — it's not unusual for the answer to change the design. Stone mass matters at this size too. A typical North American wall-mounted electric heater holds about 20 lbs of stone, and only the upper portion is functional. In a room this large, that's thin. Aim for a heater with a deep rock cavity — you want a minimum of 14 inches of stone depth above the elements so water fully converts to steam before it hits the heater casing. If your heater options are limited, slightly oversizing the kW compensates for the reduced thermal mass.
Use olivine diabase or peridotite. Never river rock or granite — they crack and shatter under thermal cycling.
Ventilation Is Not Optional at This Size
Six people in a hot room for 20 minutes produce a lot of CO₂. In an unventilated sauna, levels climb to the point where the room feels suffocating and people get dizzy or foggy — and they blame the heat, when it's actually air quality.
Target CO₂ below 700 ppm during use. For a 6-person room that means roughly 20-25 CFM per person plus 15-25 CFM for heater sensor cooling — call it 150-175 CFM.
The design that works for an electric sauna is mechanical downdraft:
- Fresh air supply above the heater, 6-12 inches below the ceiling, 3-3.5 inch minimum diameter. Incoming air gets entrained in the rising convective plume and distributed before it exits.
- Mechanical exhaust below the foot bench on the opposite wall, driven by an inline duct blower mounted outside the hot room. This pulls stale, CO₂-heavy air out at breathing height.
- Optional drying vent near the ceiling on the exhaust wall, closed during use and opened afterward to dry the room.
The common North American mistake is the reverse — fresh air low near the heater and exhaust in the ceiling. Cold air sinks and runs across the floor without ever reaching the bathers, and the ceiling exhaust pulls steam out before anyone feels it. Measured side by side, a natural-convection room peaks around 1,200 ppm CO₂ while a downdraft room stays near 700.

The biggest lever on cost is interior paneling. Purpose-made T&G cedar is $4-8 per square foot and it's one of the largest line items in the build. Cedar fence pickets run through a dado blade to create shiplap edges cost a fraction of that. The look is more rustic and there's some chance of minor warping, but we've used it on multiple builds with good long-term results.
Is a 6 Person Sauna Worth Building?
If you'll actually use the capacity, yes. If you're building for a hypothetical party that happens twice a year, you're paying for a bigger heater, a heavier circuit, and longer heat-up times every single session.
A few honest trade-offs at this size:
Heat-up time goes up. A well-insulated 8x8 with a properly sized electric heater reaches 180-200°F in 45-60 minutes. An underpowered heater in the same room will crawl and never quite hold temperature.
Running cost goes up. A 12 kW heater running an hour uses roughly twice the electricity of a 6 kW unit. Not a dealbreaker, but worth pricing at your local rate before you commit.
The structure gets tall. Covered above, but it's the single most common surprise in our design consultations.
What you get in return is a room that works for a household with mixed heat tolerance. Multi-tier benches let someone who wants intense heat sit up top while a kid or an older parent sits lower — same session, same sauna, everyone comfortable. An 8x10 outdoor building is past the size exemption in most jurisdictions, and wood-burning appliances trigger a permit nearly everywhere.
