
Barrel saunas are everywhere now, and most of them share the same weak spot: ventilation. The typical barrel ships with a single small cap vent up at the back peak, or no vent at all. That looks like ventilation but doesn't function as it — which is exactly why so many barrel owners find the sauna feels stuffy and heavy after a couple of rounds. The good news is a barrel is easy to vent properly.
A single high vent lets a little of the hottest air trickle out at the top. What it doesn't do is move air through the room. For that you need two openings working together — one letting fresh air in and one pulling stale air out — set up so air travels across the space in between. With one hole, there's no path for a current, so the CO2 you breathe out just accumulates. The mistake to avoid is putting both vents near the same end — the air short-circuits from one to the other without ever sweeping the room. Intake front-low, exhaust back-bench-height is the layout that works. For the general rules that apply to any shape, see sauna vent placement.
Because a barrel's round walls and (usually electric) heater don't drive strong convection, a small mechanical exhaust is the reliable way to keep the air fresh. A barrel takes a standard 4-inch system just like any other sauna — you drill two openings through the staves, one for intake and one for the exhaust, and the fan does the rest. If you're not sure whether your barrel has an air problem, measure it. Set a CO2 monitor on the top bench, run a normal session with the door shut, and read it after 15-20 minutes. Under 700 ppm is fine; over 1,000 ppm and your barrel needs real ventilation, not just the cap vent. We ran this test in a real sauna — the full measurement is here.
